About Us

Wakefield Climate Action Project was started by a small group of Wakefield Massachusetts residents who were looking for a way to make a difference beyond their own individual actions concerning global warming.

DRAFT OF MISSION:

The mission of Wakefield Climate Action Project is to create, implement, and promote projects and programs that help our community address global climate and environmental issues. Projects include educational presentations, establishing liaisons with like-minded groups, and working with our town government.

INITIAL PROJECTS:

1) Encourage people to change out at least one incandescent bulb for a compact florescent light (CFL) bulb. Why?

If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars. (Source: www.energystar.gov)

2) Publicize free, easy, and environmentally correct disposal/recycling method for CFLs. Why?

All fluorescent bulbs contain at least a small amount of mercury. They are safe to use, but must be disposed of properly.

3) Request that the Town of Wakefield establish an Energy Commission. Specifically, our goal is to encourage the Town to establish a permanent committee that will assist the town in procuring grants and establishing other projects that will help thAe town increase energy efficiency, with the initial goal of saving the Town, and thus taxpayers, money. Why?

There are many resources, including grants, technical assistance, and educational materials, available to Wakefield that can help our town save money, reduce our “carbon footprint,” and make our community an even better place to live. A Town-sanctioned Energy Comission would, at no cost to the town, provide research, advice, and grant writing assistance so that Wakefield could take advantage of these resources.

FUTURE PROJECTS:

Wakefield Climate Action Project, which is only a few months old, has already joined the Massachusetts Climate Action Network (MCAN) and has connected with Kids Can, Wakefield Rails to Trails, and other like-minded local, state, national, and international organizations. We plan to network with other groups and support projects that current and new WCAP members are willing to take on.

HOW TO HELP:

Join as a working member of the group, sign-up for the email list, volunteer for a one-time project, and, of course, use CFL bulbs in your home or business!
